What is the "Ratti Masha Kat" deduction system?+
When reselling finished jewellery, the receiving jeweller applies deductions for non-gold weight. Market standards dictate a minimum deduction of 1 Ratti per Masha, so liquidating a 5-tola bridal set results in a deduction of roughly 60 Ratti.
Are gold futures and CFDs halal under Islamic finance?+
Most scholars classify gold futures and Contracts for Difference as impermissible. Because these contracts do not involve the exchange of intrinsic physical value and rely on speculative settlement, they are commonly categorised as a form of gambling. Physical gold with immediate possession is the accepted alternative.
Why do local prices move in the evening?+
A large time differential exists between Pakistan and Western financial centres. As local markets approach closing, North American commodity markets open and force a real-time recalibration. Combined with peak retail demand between 7:00 PM and 10:00 PM, jewellers adjust asking prices upward.
What is the Zakat Nisab for gold in Pakistan?+
The Nisab for gold is 87.48 grams (approximately 7.5 tola). If your holdings meet or exceed this threshold and have been in your possession for one full lunar year (Hawl), Zakat of 2.5% becomes obligatory. Our Zakat calculator uses the live rate to work out the exact figure.
How many grams are in 1 tola?+
1 tola = 11.6638 grams exactly. This is the official Pakistani standard. Other useful conversions: 1 tola = 12 masha = 96 ratti. Internationally, 1 troy ounce = 31.1035 grams = approximately 2.667 tola.
What is the difference between the bidding and asking price?+
The bidding price is what a dealer pays you when you sell gold. The asking price is what you pay when you buy. The difference — the spread — is typically Rs 900 to Rs 1,200 per tola in the Pakistani Sarafa market, and it is how dealers earn their margin.
